Preventative Children's Dental Care in Chevy Chase, MD

Empowering Children with Healthy Smiles for Life

At Metropolitan Pediatric Dentistry, we believe that prevention is the key to maintaining optimal oral health in children. Our preventative care program is designed to protect your child’s smile and prevent dental issues before they start. Here’s how we approach preventative care and why it’s so important for your child.

The Importance of Preventative Dental Care

  • Preventing dental problems in their early stages is far easier than treating them once they’ve progressed further.
  • We focus on instilling good oral hygiene practices from a young age to ensure lifelong oral health.
  • Good oral health is an integral part of a child’s overall health and well-being.

Our Preventative Care Pediatric Dental Services

  • Regular Exams and Cleanings: Routine check-ups to monitor and maintain your child’s oral health.
  • Dental Sealants: Applying sealants to protect the grooves of the teeth from decay.
  • Fluoride Treatments: Using fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel and resist cavities.
  • Custom Mouthguards: Providing custom-fitted mouthguards for children involved in sports.

Educational Approach

  • Oral Hygiene Instruction: Teaching children effective brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Educating families about the impact of diet on oral health.
  • Habit Counseling: Guidance on thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and other habits that can affect dental health.

Nutrition

A good diet is essential for a child’s growth and development and children need strong healthy teeth to properly chew their food!  A healthy diet should include dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of water. Foods that are high in starch and slowly dissolvable contribute to the decay process. It is important to serve nutritious snacks and limit sweets to meal times. Snacking habits, bottles and pacifiers may impact your child’s dental health. It is pertinent to place only milk, formula, or breast milk in bottles and avoid filling the bottles with liquids such as sugar water, juice, or soft drinks.  By your child’s first birthday, you should begin to encourage them to drink from a cup by themselves and discourage frequent or prolonged use of sippy cups.
